Amazing carved book landscapes
Like many of the artists featured on Amazing Stuff, Guy Laramee, is a multi-disciplined wizard of a man who lists stage writer, director, composer, anthropologist, fabricator of musical instruments, singer, painter and writer as some of his many pursuits. When not embroiled in creating other professions for himself, Laramee sculpts books into jaw-dropping landscapes. From the pages of old journals and annuals come serene mountains, valleys and forests, painstakingly created using scalpels, grips and tweezers.
“So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint romantic landscapes,” says Laramee. “Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.”
