Last Saturday (4/6/2011) a Chilean volcano, which had lain dormant for more than 50 years, erupted in spectacular fashion. 3,500 people were evacuated form the immediate area, and airports in Chile and Argentina were closed due to the ash cloud. Surrounding areas were covered in 10-15cm of volcanic debris which descended like falling snow, blotting out the sun. This event was preceded by 230 small earthquakes which indicated an imminent eruption. It gave photographers time to get their tripods ready, and snap the following amazing photos.
These featured photographers must have read AmazingStuff’s ariticle about Skarphedinn Thrainsson’s, the volcano chaser who has made a living out of his amazing volcanic photos. On this evidence, it looks like Thrainsson has some stiff competition!
