Marco Tempest: Techno magic
Sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clark said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Marco Tempest has taken what lies on this frontier and made an art out of it.
The self-styled ‘techno-illusionist’ is unique on the world stage in his use of cutting-edge technology along with the traditional skills of a magician (he has won New York’s World Cup of Magic) and the visual creativity of an artist. It has got him his own TV show, The Virtual Magician, broadcast in 50 countries worldwide.
The Swiss magician’s amazing videos are a roaring success online too, having received a total of over 27 million views. In his latest video, above, he uses a favourite tool of his trade, the iPhone, to create a performance that blurs the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the authentic and the illusory. Tempest developed a free iPhone app called ‘MultiVid‘ for this video, which enables the user to sync a single piece of video content between several devices.
But even when method of his wizardry is clear, the effect is no less impressive. This 2010 performance at Tokyo’s TEDx conference reminds us of Blu’s epic street art animation in its innovative combination of 2D and 3D media:
